A good door and window cannot do without good glass materials. When choosing, you can focus on glass. Although many friends have heard of tempered glass, they do not have much knowledge about insulated glass, laminated glass, and Low-e glass. The current market for doors and windows is a mix of good and bad. Many friends who have learned about big brand doors and windows and then compare them with unknown small brand doors and windows may wonder why there is such a big price difference when looking at the same glass?
Glass is a material that occupies more than 70% of the area of doors and windows. The quality of glass material directly affects sound insulation, air leakage, safety, lighting, etc. Today, I will share with you how to choose door and window glass, so that you can understand it and avoid pitfalls.
1、 Choosing glass also depends on the brand
Glass refers to raw glass pieces. Generally, door and window brands do not produce glass themselves, but mainly assemble it by purchasing raw glass pieces. There is also a difference between good and bad glass materials. Poor glass materials have a shorter service life and may also cause air leakage and water ingress.
2、 Glass type and applicable location
Glass is mainly divided into ordinary glass and insulating glass. Due to different processes, it can be divided into tempered glass, laminated glass, warm edge glass, and Low-e coated glass. Nowadays, high-end glass combines these four glass processes with insulating glass.
Tempered glass
Tempered glass is a type of reinforced glass that has excellent resistance to pressure and impact. Tempered glass has requirements for its usage environment, as it may experience thermal expansion and contraction in environments with large temperature differences, and may potentially self destruct.
Hollow glass
Hollow glass is suitable for places where insulation, heat insulation, and sound insulation are desired. Hollow glass is a heat-insulating and soundproof glass made by bonding two or three pieces of glass with an aluminum alloy frame using high-strength and high airtightness composite adhesive technology.
Laminated glass
Laminated glass is made up of two or more pieces of glass, glued together with a layer of PVB material in between. It has better sound insulation than insulating glass, but relatively poorer insulation. If you want better sound insulation and heat insulation glass, you can consider laminated insulating glass.
Low-e coated glass
Low-E glass, also known as low emissivity glass, is a type of glass that is coated with multiple layers of metal film on its surface. The metal film has the characteristic of detecting visible and far-infrared light waves. It is suitable for french window and places with strong sunlight.
3、 Suggestions for choosing glass
If pursuing sound insulation effect, it is recommended to choose insulated laminated glass. If considering insulation effect, it is recommended to choose Low-e coated glass. If it is a bathroom shower door or kitchen sliding door, it is recommended to choose tempered glass.
